Thursday, May 4 – Day 3: Jerusalem – Old City

After breakfast at hotel, we will proceed to the Old City of Jerusalem and enter through the Dung Gate to the Southern Wall excavations. We will see the ruins from the Second Temple, as well as the Robinson Arch, which used to lead the high priests from City of David into the Temple, without going through traffic. Here, we will have the option to renew our wedding vows (must be requested in advance). We will proceed through the broad stone stairway down to the holy Western Wall – the “Kotel”. We begin at the passageways descending through the many layers of Jerusalem’s past at the time of the Temple through the Western Wall Tunnels. Inside, a most interesting model shows the different dwelling periods and history of the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Stand on the site believed to be the nearest spot to the “Holy of Holies”. We will continue to the Jewish Quarter, which was reconstructed after the city was unified at the conclusion of the Six-Day War in 1967. A special point of interest in the restored Jewish Quarter is the “Cardo”, meaning the “heart” of this ancient Byzantine City. We will view the unearthed main Roman thoroughfare and ancient marketplace lined with columns. View the Hurva Synagogue, which was destroyed and rebuilt in the Jewish Quarter and the Four Sephardic Synagogues. Enjoy the remainder of the afternoon wandering through the Old City bazaar. We will return to our hotel and enjoy dinner at our hotel.

Friday, May 5 – Day 4: City of David, Israel Museum, Bazaar and Kotel

After breakfast, we will drive to the City of David. We begins with the breathtaking observation point overlooking Biblical Jerusalem, dating back 3,800 years in time to the days of Abraham, when the first foundations of the city were laid. The journey quickly heads underground to some of the newest archaeological excavations. Here, while exploring the recently excavated fortresses and passageways, visitors relive King David’s conquest of the Jebusite city as described in the 2nd Book of Samuel. We will continue to Israel Museum to see the model city of Jerusalem as it used to look like in 66 CE. In that fateful year, the Great Revolt against the Romans erupted, resulting in the destruction of the city and the Temple. The ancient city was then at its largest, covering an area of ca. 445 acres (more than twice the size of the Old City today). In the same complex, we will also visit the Shrine of the Book. Here we will see the original Dead Sea scrolls and where they are housed. In the afternoon, we will proceed to Machane Yehuda Shook (market/bazaar). The shook is very popular with locals and tourists, with more than 250 vendors who sell fresh fruits and vegetables to Judaica items. It is usually very busy on Friday, prior to Shabbat. We will enjoy some rest and prepare for a traditional Shabbat dinner at our hotel.

The Zealots held out for three years against the legions of Flavius Silva and chose to die as free men at their own hands rather than submit to Roman slavery and torture. From the top of Masada, the outlines of the Roman encampments are still visible below. We will continue north via the Jordan Valley to ancient city of Beit Shean, also known as “Scythopolis”, dated to the Byzantine era. We will walk through the largest ongoing archaeological dig in the land of Israel, with its amphitheater, colonnaded Roman streets, mosaics, and the Roman bath house. We will see the monument built on site in honor of the Alexandroni brigade. We will proceed to Banias Springs, considered the largest spring feeding from Mt. Hermon and leading into the Jordan River. We will conclude our day with our last visit to a Golan winery, for a taste of the Golan’s special and unique flavor. We will return to our hotel.
